Sacred music for Christmas: Handel’s “Messiah” at Blackhawk Church and some less expensive options

December 7, 2009

Handel - Messiah
Handel’s “Messiah” is one of the world’s most popular choral works and attending performances of it are a tradition in many families. This year, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra will perform Handel’s “Messiah” at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 11th at the Blackhawk Church in Verona. General admission tickets are $30 apiece, and the church has already sold its share; so you’ll need to purchase tickets from the Overture Center box office.

If a $30 ticket is too steep for your budget, consider some other, less expensive options to a live performance of “Messiah.”

Beverly Taylor will conduct the combined UW-Madison Choral Union and Chamber Union as they perform “Chichester Psalms” by Leonard Bernstein and “Missa cellensis” by Joseph Haydn at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 10th and 8 p.m. Friday, December 11th in Mills Hall. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $8 for seniors (60+) and students. They may be purchased from the Wisconsin Union Theater box office (online, in-person, or by telephone). They will also be sold in the lobby of the concert hall one hour before the performance.

If you want to enjoy Handel’s “Messiah from the comfort of your own home, you might want to consider investing in a CD such as The Royal Philharmonic’s Messiah:The Complete Work, 2 CD Set.

The least expensive option for lots of Christmas and holiday music may be your television: Wisconsin Public Television’s holiday schedule includes Christmas With the Mormon Tabernacle Choir: Featuring Brian Stokes Mitchell and Edward Hermann at 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 16th; The Three Tenors Christmas at 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 23rd and 10 p.m. Thursday, December 24th; and Christmas at St. Olaf Where Peace and Love, and Hope Abide at 9 p.m. Thursday, December 24th.
