Sjolind’s Chocolate House is one of our favorite places — and at the risk of making it so popular we can’t find a table, we’d like to introduce you to it by giving away a $15 gift certificate to one of our Madison on the Cheap readers.

Located at 219 East Main Street in Mount Horeb, Sjolind’s is the place we go to for a terrific slice of layer cake, a mouth-watering fruit tart, a tasty scone, and the best Sunday-morning coffee cake in Dane County. If that’s not enough there are always cookies, decadent chocolate pastries, and, if you arrive early enough, savory quiches. Accompany one of these with some fresh-brewed tea, coffee, or hot chocolate and relax and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of this small-town specialty cafe.

Or spend some time examining what’s on the shelves and in the drawers that surround the open kitchen where you can watch the bakers at work. You may find homemade marshmallows; French macarons (not to be confused with macaroons); boxes of handmade caramels and chocolate truffles; and chocolate-covered dried fruit. There are also scores of high-quality chocolate bars, including Exotic Chocolate Bars from Vosges Chocolat,Cowgirl Chocolates, and a wide variety of Fair Trade brands.

If you live on Madison’s West Side, Mount Horeb may be a short trip. If you live on the Isthmus or Madison’s East Side, we still think it’s worth the trip to this charming town with its troll-lined streets and free parking. Sjolind’s is only yards away from some of Mount Horeb’s specialty stores, including Open House Imports (where you can buy postcards of the trolls), Olson’s Christmas House (with its enormous collection of ornaments), and The Prairie Book Store.

If we’ve whet your appetite for a visit to Sjolind’s, we hope you’ll visit them soon (and tell them we sent you). And if you enter our giveaway contest and win the $15 gift certificate to Sjolind’s Chocolate House, your trip may be just a little sweeter than usual.

If you’d like to enter this giveaway contest, here’s what you’ll need to do:

Leave a comment on this post and tell us about your favorite dessert. Don’t just say “pie” or “cake.” Tell us more, provide some tasty details.

You must leave your name (first name only, if you wish) and a valid e-mail address (which will not be visible to others). We need the e-mail address to contact the winner for addition information (mailing address).

Ice cream! or carrot cake… or maybe blueberry cobbler. Too many!

Good old fashioned, homemade chocolate pudding. Not the instant kind! The pudding that is cooked on the stove and stirred and stirred so that the milk doesn’t burn. Then, the hot, syrupy chocolate mix is poured into ceramic bowls and placed in the fridge to cool. Of course, you lick the pot! And then, the wait! At least an hour until a skin has started to form on top of the still warm pudding. Yuuuuummmmmy!

My favorite dessert these days is So Delicious Purely Decadent Coconut Milk “ice cream” – the cookie dough flavor. Although, a really good cookie (peanut butter chocolate chip) is a close second.

Bumbleberry pie – which contains apples, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Da Bomb!

5 Jan September 8, 2010 at 6:51 am

chocolate layer cake with lots of creamy buttery rich chocolate frosting in between, dense dark chocolate cake, all with vanilla ice cream on the side. Oh my!

Old fashioned brownies, made in a double boiler, with lots of chocolate!

I love those creme de menthe and chocolate bars – the layers of the creamy mint and cakey chocolate melt in your mouth!

9 Vicki September 8, 2010 at 7:34 am

Crème brulee. I love this creamy custard with a little bit of crunch from the melted, hard, caramelized sugar topping. I add a few drops of Grand Manier (or another favorite liqueur) to the custard and it’s oh so tasty!! My mouth is watering as I type this!

My girlfriend makes the most amazing lemon cake with raspberry filling. And a light almost whipped cream-like frosting that is not too sweet. Yum!

Brownie Sundae: A rich chocolate brownie with chocolate or vanilla ice cream, topped with hot fudge and brownie pieces.

What is the stuff of dreams? It is a warm peach cobbler. Nothing in life tastes quite so perfect, and very few things make you feel quite so good. Warm peaches, generous brown sugar, a flaky crust, and a touch of cinnamon means you’re going to have a great day.

Chocolate chip cookies. Not only do I love the flavor, but they bring back great memories of my grandmother baking them when I was a kid. Of licking the spoon and bowl. Of melty chips as I bit into the first cookie before it was fully cooled.

Tiramisu…glorious chocolate, coffee, cream…pure delite. Delizioso!

15 C.J. September 8, 2010 at 10:49 am

Plain original New York cheese cake, nothing to get in the way of tasting it’s smooth rich creamy goodness. Maybe a cherry or two on occasion, if I’m feeling wild that day. :)

My favorite desserts are the alcoholic ones. Does a Blind Russian count as a dessert? It should. It’s probably got more sugar and fat in it than a big piece of chocolate cake. Vodka + Kahlua + Bailey’s = buzzy deliciousness. If cocktails don’t count, I’d have to pick the poundcake sundaes at Ella’s Deli. Grilled poundcake that’s still warm covered with ice cream and hot fudge? Perfect.

I’m fairly simple… stove top popped popcorn is generally my first choice… along with a good craft beer.

18 Joyce September 8, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Chocolate cheesecake with a drizzle of raspberry syrup and one fresh raspberry on top.

19 Laura September 8, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Passion Fruit Mousse – a Brazilian delicacy made with condensed milk, milk cream and passion fruit juice. And if you top it with chocolate crumbs, it’s even better!

20 Christine September 8, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Red velvet cake…my mom made the best for all special occasions when I was growing up.

21 Bailey Hatch September 8, 2010 at 1:02 pm

My favorite dessert is moose tracks icecream with a warm melted chocolate brownie on top. The more fudge, the better!

22 Sara September 8, 2010 at 1:07 pm

My grandmother’s recipe for carrot cake with cream cheese frosting – YUM! My recipe card is looking a little ragged for how many times I’ve made this.

23 Rachel September 8, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Bananas Foster!!! Also works well as favorite breakfast, lunch or snack. ;)

24 Tricia September 8, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Homemade cinnamon chocolate chip waffles topped with bananas foster. A little obscure, but to die for!

25 Sarah September 8, 2010 at 1:22 pm

I recently discovered how to infuse heavy cream with basil and it has rocked my dessert world. I’d have to say my favorite dessert now is strawberry shortcake with basil-infused whipped cream.

Alternatively, cookies. Lots and lots of kinds of cookies (oatmeal raisin, monster, cranberry walnut, etc.).

26 Stacie September 8, 2010 at 1:42 pm

My Weight Watchers Better Than Sex Cake. Seriously…need I say anymore?! LOL! It is the bet thing ever!!! Will share the recipe if you want. If you love chocolate and more chocolate this is the cake for you!! *Drool*

27 Erin September 8, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Among other super chocolate desserts, I love Wellesley Fudge cake- it’s a rich chocolate cake with thick fudgy icing!

28 Tina September 8, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Chocolate covered strawberries! Especially dark chocolate. Yummy!!

29 Katie September 8, 2010 at 3:17 pm

My favorite would have to be Caramel Brownie Cheesecake. It’s one of my most requested desserts. It’s a brownie crust, then a thick layer of homemade caramel, topped with a layer of cheesecake. Once it’s done baking, I drizzle caramel sauce & chocolate sauce over the top.

30 Carrie September 8, 2010 at 3:31 pm

Chewy chocolate chip cookies just out of the oven. Preferably not quite wholly baked!

31 Joanna September 8, 2010 at 3:44 pm

So many good ones to choose from, but I especially love a good Italian cannoli — filled with sweetened ricotta cheese and miniature chocolate chips. With a fresh pastry shell, of course.

32 Sarah Jean Hartnell September 8, 2010 at 4:53 pm

I love chocolate mousse. I had it at a french restaurant and have not found the equivalent anywhere.

33 Pam September 9, 2010 at 9:28 am

Anything chocolate….with ice cream and/or hot fudge to top it off right! I think I’m gaining weight just thinking about that cute little chocolate shop downtown Mt. Horeb!

34 Roxie September 9, 2010 at 11:01 am

Anything chocolate! Seriously. Dark chocolate is my fav with raspberries, or strawberries, or peanut butter, or……. I think you get the idea!

35 Karen September 9, 2010 at 1:22 pm

If I’m making it myself, cookie dough cobbler, warm with vanilla ice cream. Out to eat is definitely creme brulee. Fabulous custard and that torched sugar top… YUM!

36 Jennifer September 9, 2010 at 4:37 pm

My boyfriend makes the best cheesecake ever! He experiments with all different kinds from chocolate chip cookie dough to tropical with pineapple and coconut

37 Kelly September 10, 2010 at 9:34 am

Lemon meringue pie–with tangy lemon and fluffy, caramelized meringue.

Warm Marionberry pie with Vanilla Ice Cream

39 Nancy September 10, 2010 at 1:53 pm

My mom’s homemade German Cheescake hands down! Otherwise, a decadent mocha tart with a side of espresso, but don’t forget the dollop of fresh whipped cream and a couple of raspberries to top it off.

40 Rachel September 11, 2010 at 8:55 am

My favorite dessert is an Oreo Cookie Dessert made with an Oreo cookie crust, a layer of cream cheese mixed with powdered sugar, followed by chocolate pudding and topped with Cool Whip and Oreo sprinkles-YUM!

41 Kathy September 11, 2010 at 10:56 am

My mom’s apple kuchen made with apples from the back yard and topped with a generous dollop of home made whipped cream!

42 Emily Hansen September 11, 2010 at 12:33 pm

My grandma’s rum balls! Just like little truffles, really fudgy, but burstin with rum and chocolate flavor!

43 Miranda September 12, 2010 at 12:59 am

Molten chocolate cake. Or Tres Leche cake! Yum!

44 Melissa September 12, 2010 at 11:59 pm

Cookie Dough Eggrolls at Bluphies. *Drooling*

45 Julie September 13, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Flourless chocolate cake. Rich and decadent with a smooth, slightly bitter ganache, accompanied with a cup of espresso. It’s the kind of goodness where you close your eyes and are silent while you savor the bites.

46 Belinda September 13, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Old fashioned brownies – the kind that has lots of butter and sugar & cooked on the stove, with a thick layer of homemade chocolate frosting. YUM!
