Yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as a free lunch. This year is our 19th anniversary special “Lunch On the House” It will be served on Monday, September 6th from noon until 2 p.m.

What’s for lunch? Leung says, “This is a pretty fast in and out type of FULL Chinese lunch service including egg roll. It’s delicious and we open an outdoor area to serve as many as possible during this promotion. It’s a great thing for us, we only hope to get our menu in the hands of as many Madisonians as will show up!”

Here’s a basic summary of the “rules” for this special Labor Day Event:

Doors open at 12 noon.
Free Lunch served until 2 p. m.
Lunches will be carry-out only.
No Purchase necessary.
One entrée per person.
No need to place order in advance.

On your behalf, we asked a couple of follow-up questions and learned that there will be several entrée choices, including a vegetarian option.

Please remember, this free carry-out lunch event is only at the Downtown Hong King Cafe location, 2 South Mills Street. And please remember to say “Thank you” to Leung and his staff when you pick up your lunch on Monday.

Enter our giveaway contest and you may win a $25 gift certificate to Claddagh Irish Pub in Middleton

“It’s always about food,” insists Izzie the Intern. That’s why food is going to be the focus of our next few giveaway contests.

If you want to win a $25 gift certificate for Claddagh Irish Pub at Greenway Commons in Middleton, you’ll want to enter this Madison on the Cheap giveaway contest.

This is a Restaurant.com gift certificate and it does not have an expiration date – although we suspect the winner probably won’t wait too long to use it. We chose Claddagh Irish Pub because we like the food and the atmosphere – and because we know that gift certificates for this establishment usually aren’t in stock too long at Restaurant.com and are rarely available near the end of the month when prices are very low.

This $25 gift certificate is good with a minimum purchase of $35 and is valid for food only. It may be used Sunday-Thursday (excluding holidays and special events).

If you’d like to enter this giveaway contest, here’s what you’ll need to do: Continue reading Enter our giveaway contest and you may win a $25 gift certificate to Claddagh Irish Pub in Middleton

BOGO coupon on Facebook for Better Oats cereals

Since we mentioned oatmeal, we thought it might be a good idea to tell you about a BOGO coupon for Better Oats. Visit their Facebook page and click on the Special Offer tab to access the offer.

This is apparently a new product with somewhat limited distribution. The only place we’ve seen Better Oats is at Woodman’s West. It comes in lots of intriguing flavors and we paid $1.49 for a five-serving box. Seems a bit pricey, but the BOGO coupon persuaded us to try it.

Coupon for $1 off Kellogg’s FiberPlus™ cereals & bars

Need more fiber in your diet? We recommend steel cut oatmeal, flax seeds, raspberries, and prunes.

The folks who make Kellogg’s cereal recommend you try their new line of Kellogg’s FiberPlus™ cereals and bars with antioxidants — and they’re offering a $1 off coupon as an incentive. Just visit their website and click on the “Get $1 off now” button to print your coupon.

We checked out the nutrition information for these products, and while they are high in fiber they also contain ingredients we can’t pronounce (FRUCTOOLIGOSACCHARIDES), so we’re sticking with oatmeal.

BOGO coupon for Athenos Feta Cheese products

Visit the Facebook page for Athenos and you can print a BOGO (Buy One, Get One free) coupon for any Athenos feta cheese product.

Izzy the Intern printed the coupon last night so we could see when it expired (30 days from print date), but he forgot whether or not he also had to “like” the product before he could print it.

This is a Bricks coupon, so you’ll need to have coupon printing software on your computer. This also means there’s probably a limit on how many coupons may be available. As always, if you’re interested in securing one of these coupons for yourself, take action sooner rather than later.

Learn all about beets at Wednesday Night at the Lab

Learn all about beets, one of the world’s most under-appreciated root vegetables, at the next Wednesday Night at the Lab, held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on August 18th, in Room 1111 (the auditorium) at 425 Henry Mall (the Genetics-Biotechnology Center Building).

Irwin Goldman, a Professor of Horticulture, will deliver a presentation titled “The Beet Goes On: Health, Nutrition, and Social Justice from an Under-appreciated Root Vegetable.”

According to Goldman, “While generations of children have confronted the challenges of canned vegetables, beets and many other root crops can be roasted and prepared in ways that breathe new life into this ancient vegetable. Australians, for example, typically put beet slices on their burgers, much in the way Americans use tomato and lettuce. And beets turn out to have a number of nutritional benefits that make them an ideal complement to a healthy diet. Along the way, they have given rise to the modern sugarbeet, played an important role in Wisconsin’s agriculture, and served to fulfill the suggestion by Michael Pollan that it’s a good idea to seek out foods that your great-grandmother would have recognized.”

Wednesday Nite @ the Lab is organized by the Wisconsin Alumni Association. Programs are free and open to the public,
