Join the celebration at the Triangle Ethnic Fest Sunday

Triangle Ethnic festival
The 26th annual Triangle Ethnic Fest
runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m Sunday, August 15th in the triangle formed by the intersection of South Park Street, Regent Street, and Braxton Place. There is no admission charge and parking is free.

The festival will feature a wide variety of dance and music performances, including appearances by the Italian Folk Dancers of Madison, Viv Ncaus Hmong Dancers, the “Metienins” Latvian Dance Group, and the 15 Omar Coleman Blues Band featuring A.J. Love.

In addition, there will be historical and cultural exhibits; arts and craft vendors; a dunk tank; and ethnic food vendors, including Vientiane Restaurant (Lao and Thai), People’s Bakery (Middle Eastern), Italian American Women’s Club (Italian Grill and Bakery), Jamerica (Jamaican), and Leon Garcia (Mexican corn and ice cream).

Kids’ class explores history through food & cooking

From 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24th, kids ages 6-12 can participate in a class at Whole Foods Market, 3313 University Avenue, that will teach them how to make traditional dishes from the “ration and reuse” World War II era, including Mock Apple Pie, Mashed Potato Volcanoes, and Toad-in-the-Hole. The class is part of a new “Time Traveling Table” series intended to explore history through food and cooking.

There is a $10 fee for the course. If you’d like your child to participate in this class, please register and pay 48 hours in advance. Register in person at the Whole Foods customer service desk or call (608) 233-9566.

Savor the Summer Festival at Troy Gardens Saturday


You’re invited to attend the annual Savor the Summer Festival at Troy Gardens from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 7th.

The event will feature entertainment by the Boys & Girls Blackstar Drumline, as well as other music, hayrides, kids’ activities, a free community garden feast, and Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream (while it lasts). The “Savor the Summer” cookbook, t-shirts, and other goods will be on sale.

Troy Gardens was born of a community vision for a unique parcel of state-owned surplus land. The Friends of Troy Gardens (now Community GroundWorks at Troy Gardens) was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2001 and created what is now one of Madison, Wisconsin’s hidden treasures: an urban organic farm. Troy Gardens is located on the 500 block of Troy Drivee on Madison’s East Side.

Downtown Kids to Kids garage sale Saturday morning


The City of Madison Parks Department will host its first Kids to Kids Garage Sale from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, August 7th on the 100 Block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard (adjacent to the Capitol Square and Saturday’s Farmers’ Market).

Youth will be selling their own items to other kids. This may be a great way to find deals on slightly used clothing, games, books, toys, electronics, and puzzles

In addition to the sale, after shopping at the Kids to Kids Garage Sale, you’re invited to enjoy a hay ride around the Capitol Square. Rides are $2/person.

Kids can build a free pencil organizer at Home Depot


On the the first Saturday of the month, Home Depot offers free, hands-on Kids Workshops for children ages 5-12. This month’s workshop will be from 9 a.m. until noon on August 7th. The project will be building a “School Bus Pencil Organizer.”

The workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. The workshops also allow for quality one-on-one time between adults and children.

In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates’ aprons, and an achievement pin.

The Madison-area Home Depot locations are at 4550 Verona Road and 2425 East Springs Drive.

Family-friendly event celebrates African culture


Kidlinks World is sponsoring the 5th annual Africa Alive event from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 7th at the Capital Brewery, 7734 Terrace Avenue in Middleton.

This fund-raising even brings together the rhythm and vibrancy of Africa with fun for the whole family, and will feature WADOMA West African Dance of Madison, Tani Diakite, Tony Castaneda, Andy Ewen, juggling, drumming, face painting, African storytelling, a live and silent auction and much more!

There is a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children under 16, with 100% of the proceeds raised going directly to benefit AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children in Southern Africa.

Kidlinks World, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3, non-profit organization that is based in Madison, Wisconsin and is 100% volunteer-run and donor-funded. Kidlinks has been in existence since 2004, with the mission of improving the lives of AIDS orphans and vulnerable children in Southern Africa.

WOLX brings back “Free Circus World Sundays”

Admission to Circus World in Baraboo is normally $14.95 during the annual performance season, but radio station WOLX (94.9) is once again offering its listeners free tickets for Sundays (6th, 15th, and 22nd) during the month of August as part of its “Free Circus World Sundays” promotion.

Visit the WOLX website on Mondays to print your free tickets for the upcoming Sunday. Tickets are good for only one Sunday, so you must revisit the website each week to print your tickets.

The kid-friendly Circus World, located at 500 Water Street in Baraboo, offers classic circus shows, magic shows, guided tours of the collection, and interactive activities — including animal rides! You’ll find a complete performance schedule on their website.

Register your kids for Bucky’s Buddies Soccer Clinic


It’s not too early to register for his year’s Bucky’s Buddies Soccer Clinic scheduled for noon on Saturday, August 21st at the McClimon Soccer Complex, located on Walnut Street on the west side of campus, near UW Hospital.

Sponsored by American Family Insurance, Bucky’s Buddies Soccer Clinic offers kids age 12 and under an opportunity to participate in a skills clinic given by the University of Wisconsin men’s and women’s soccer teams. For only $9 each, participants will receive a clinic t-shirt, pizza courtesy of Papa John’s, and tickets to future Badgers games, including the Wisconsin women’s soccer team 2010 opener on Friday, August 27th.

To register their children for this clinic, parents should download the online PDF registration form, complete it, and mail it (and a check for the registration fee) to the UW-Madison Athletic Department.

“Amphibian Antics” at the Lakeview Library Thursday


Kids and their families are invited to meet Wisconsin naturalist Randy Korb and his amphibians – live frog, toads, and salamanders — during his free “Amphibian Antics” demonstration at the Lakeview Branch Library, 2845 North Sherman Avenue at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 22nd.

According to his website, Korb ” …has given talks and workshops on amphibians and butterflies to teachers and students in midwest and east coast states. His “hands-on” frog and toad presentations are extremely popular in schools and libraries. In 2001 he authored the book and CD “Wisconsin Frogs-Places to Hear Frogs and Toads Near Our Urban Areas.” In 2009 he wrote a children’s book, “Blinky-A Special Gray Tree Frog” and produced “The Calls OF Wisconsin Frogs DVD. ”

If you can’t make it to this event, Korb will also be presenting “Amphibian Antics” at the Mount Horeb Library on Thursday, August 5th and the Meadowridge Branch Library on Friday, August 6th.

“Wright 4 Kids” event at Hillside School Saturday


Taliesin Preservation, Inc. will be host “Wright 4 Kids,” a free architectural event for children at the Hillside School in Spring Green on Saturday, July 17th. Hillside School is part of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin estate and currently the summer headquarters for the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

The program will include kid-friendly tours of this National Historic Landmark, model-building, fun with geometric blocks, and art activities geared toward children ages 5–12.

There will be morning (9 a.m. until noon) and afternoon sessions (1 p.m. until 4 p.m.). Advance registration is required for “Wright 4 Kids,” since there is a maximum capacity for this event. Free passes to Mt. Olympus water park in the Dells


As part of its 40th birthday celebration, Mt. Olympus in Wisconsin Dells is giving away FREE Water Park Passes July 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th, 2010. These passes give you access to the WATER PARK ONLY.

You are not allowed to come and go from the park with these passes, once you enter, if you leave, you will not be allowed to return unless you upgrade to a “Full Day Come and Go” pass.

You can reserve your FREE WATER PARK ONLY PASS by using the form on the Mt. Olympus website. You must enter your arrival date, number of tickets and then click submit. Once you’ve clicked submit – look for the “RSVP Tickets” button and click it get your FREE Water Park Only Pass.

Make paper rockets at the UW Space Place Saturday


Learn how to make paper rockets at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 10th in a family-friendly event at the UW Space Place, 2300 South Park Street.

Space Place family workshops are offered every Saturday at 10 a.m. for children ages 6-10 and their parents. The workshops are free and open to the public. No registration is required.

If you can’t attend this workshop, don’t despair. Madison on the Cheap loves paper craft projects and we’ve found some nifty websites and blogs for those of you who want to try your hand at making paper rockets:

Kids can earn shopping cards for summer reading


Half Price Books is sponsoring a “Feed Your Brain” summer reading program for kids ages 14 and under. They can earn a $3 Half Price Books Shopping Card for each week of the program during which they read at least 15 minutes per day.

Dean House “Back Porch Concert” Thursday evening

The Sound of Music Chorus, a group of women of all ages who love to sing four-part harmony, barbershop style, will perform a free concert at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 1st at the Historic Blooming Grove Historical Society’s (HBGHS) Dean House, 4718 Monona Drive in Monona Grove.

This is the 36th year that the HBGHS has presented free public concerts on their lawn on Thursday evenings. Known as the “Back Porch Concerts,” these summer events bring a variety of musical talent to perform for all who come to listen and lounge in any comfortable way they desire — which means they bring their own lawn chairs or spread blankets on the lawn.

At intermission, volunteers will pass the hat for a free-will offering that will go to benefit of the Dean House. Sales of soft drinks and snacks also benefit the Society.

Free Ken Lonnquist concerts at libraries Tuesday

Singer-song writer Ken Lonnquist will perform three free concerts on Tuesday, June 29th as part of the Madison Public Library’s Summer Reading Club activities.

Lonnquist will perform his family-friendly concerts at the Monroe Street Branch at 10 a.m., the Alicia Ashman Branch at 2 p.m., and the Pinney Branch at 7 p.m. Please register online if you plan to attend the concert at the Monroe Street Branch. Registration is not required for the other two locations.

Summer kids film series at Marcus Theatres


Marcus Theatres is offering a summer kids film series at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays though August 12th. Tickets are $2.75 and include FREE popcorn.

Upcoming films include “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” (June 30th-July 1st), “The Tooth Hurts” (July 7th-8th), and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (July 14th-15th).

Pie making class for kids at Whole Foods Market

Monty’s invites kids to invent a new ice cream flavor


If you’re 12 or under and love to dream up crazy names for ice cream, here’s a contest for you: Help Monty’s Blue Plate Diner celebrate its 20th anniversary “by inventing the best-tasting, out-of-this-world ice cream flavor!”

If your flavor is wins, Sassy Cow Creamery will make it and Monty’s will serve it — and although it doesn’t say so on the official entry form, we assume the inventor of the winning flavor will get some free samples.

Monty’s will be be accepting contest entries from June 20th through July 3rd, 2010. Parents and/or computer savvy kids 12 and under will need to download the official PDF entry form, fill it in and submit it to Monty’s before the deadline.

Monty’s Blue Plate Diner is located at 2089 Atwood Avenue on Madison’s East Side.
