Welcome

Whether you are a local, a tourist or you just moved here, welcome to Madison on the Cheap, a guide to all things arts-related in Madison, Wisconsin. There is a lot to do culture-wise in the Badger State (it is not all about football and cheese, although we like those, too!), and it is our mission to introduce you to some things to do around our wonderful city. Read on for an overview, and then browse our blog posts for more information.

There are plenty of opportunities to see them. Want to dance away to big-time, well-known bands, or laugh a lot at a comedy show? You are also in luck. There is no limit to what comes to Madison. Performances in concert halls, in theaters, in the woods, and on the street are sure to amaze.

Catch shows throughout the year by or at places such as the following:

  • Atlas Improv Company
  • Fireside Dinner Theatre
  • High Nine Saloon
  • Kanopy Dance Company
  • Madison Ballet
  • Madison Opera
  • Madison Symphony Orchestra
  • Orpheum Theater

Music

It is hard to put a finger on what music style dominates in Madison. The truth is, we like a little bit of everything. Regardless of if you prefer pop, rock, or something in between, you will find something to listen to, indoors and out.

If you want to go where the locals do, check out The Orpheum Theater, The Sylvee, Alliant Energy Center and Overture Center for the Arts.

There are plenty of choices if you like to listen to music with a view. See live musical acts at the Plaza, the Memorial Union Terrace, or the Monona Terrace. Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s summer season, as well as Concerts on the Square, offers plenty of opportunities for you and your friends to lounge on the grass or pack a picnic and listen to some music.

Festival Fun

Since we are all about sharing ways for you to get your culture fix cheaply, we have to tell you about our festivals, which we take very seriously in Madison. They all offer plenty of music, food, and excitement for locals and visitors young and old, from Brat Fest to Make Music Madison.

No matter what type of art you fancy, we invite you to explore Madison. We think you will love what there is to offer.
